She smiled to show her brand new teeth.
“Y’all come on over,” Mama said,
We did it, loaded up with leaf.
“Y’all come on to the ‘bacca shed.”
and look at that snake Lonnie killed.”
Long and thick as a hoe handle,
our mule stomped on it in the field.
Lonnie’s strong legs and black ankle
Crushed that rattler’s head like an egg.
Now dangling from a ‘bacca stick
it still makes me weak in the leg.
Dust eaters like this know a trick
or two the Bible says, like how
they can put their tail in their mouth,
roll like a hoop, hang from a bough
gain on a boy and run him down,
wrap around him like sticky tape
or just whip him hard with his tail
that leaves weeping whelps like a rake.
Oh Lord look at that rattler smile.
Hanging on that ‘bacca stick.
Her mouth all broken and full of guile.
