Yes, probably horrible, like Zemeckis' 'Beowulf'.
I'll bet you this: if you pick up Father Elijah you won't be able to put it down. Or at least be very impatient to pick it back up again. That's all I'll say. No point in ruining it for you.
The mention of Terrence Malick in the production perked me up. This sounds very, very promising to me. If only he was the director. His input, and I hope it's a lot, can only make it better. The novel definitely is filmable, but with difficulties, obviously. Namely, to weave the main narrative, which is indeed a "thriller" in many respects, with the unfolding eschatological profundity and back stories, without the whole thing getting bogged down in its own weight.
What's up the company's name? I am Third? I'm clearly missing something. Is it referring to the third person of the Trinity?

The O'Brien film could be slick and thrilling, or it could be campy beyond belief. I'll be curious to see which, but my money's on the latter. They'll have to be very choosy about portrayals if they're going to make it work. Meanwhile, let's get cracking on this THX Beyond business.

Way to be downer katycarl! Seriously, though, I do think that is rather likely, though I am hopeful that it will be produced by serious filmmakers. Having Malick involded does bode well -- he's been involved in some movies that were quite good.

Why don't we make one of those on-line novenas for the film production? Couldn't hurt.
Anyone want to make a journey to Lucas' ranch? We'll foot it, that way he'll be more likely to sympathize and hear us out: 'THX Beyond eh? Just a half hour of my time? You'll milk the cows for me? Sure.'

That's good news, anyway. I'll continue to hope for the best and expect the worst, Syme -- what Miz Flannery likes to call "Christian realism." Anyway, re: saints and movies, has anyone seen 'Becket'? I just saw it last week and totally, highly recommend. It's from the 60s, and the reel was thought to be lost, but they recently found it, restored it, and released it on DVD. A few things aren't quite historical, and Peter O'Toole as Henry II is a mite over-the-top for my money, but Richard Burton as the man himself thoroughly carries the movie. And, wow, excommunication scene! Definitely pick this up at Blockbuster. Or, heck, buy the DVD. You're going to want it, I think.

Yes! Actually just saw it over Thanksgiving. It was very good, if admittedly the story seemed at times a little "hollywoodized." But what a production and what an impressive story. It's really odd how this story and the Thomas More story parallel each other so closely. Did you know they actually re-released it in theatres last year? It was a limited release, of course, but my local indy theatre had it. Alas, I wasn't able to watch it in the big screen, but I rented it later and watched it in a big TV screen, if that counts.

Yeah, I had heard about the theatre re-release, but then forgot about it until... last week, actually. You're right, Becket and More do closely parallel each other in being Catholic chancellors falsely accused and betrayed by headstrong egocentric King Henrys. Runs in the family, I suppose. Does anyone know how accurate the movie backstory about Becket's life is, though? Like, was he a wild 12th-century party animal before his ordination and conversion? Or is that all Hollywood?

St. Michael always looks good in art. I am sure he would make an awesome film subject as well (find either an awesome animator or someone who can costuming and effects without making it look cheesy).
I wouldn't mind seeing Sts. Brendan, Elizabeth of Portugal, or Lawrence done in film either. I would like to see Brendan animated though (a good portion of what I know of him would probably boil down to legend anyway-still a nice story).
Elizabeth of Portugal ought to be done on location (she supposedly drafted and designed some churches and other buildings-quite skilled for a woman of her time). They would have to fly people between Portugal and Spain for it.

Whoa! I missed that there was a second page of this topic! I didn't know that Becket is now on DVD (I will look for it too).

Hells yeah, St. Michael looks good in art. I wear him around my neck. I guess if you wanted a movie that was all-out action (and, realistically, probably a lot of CGI), you could make a War in Heaven flick about--well, not to spoil it or anything, but it would tend to be about the war in Heaven. St. Mike kicking the $#!+ of ol' Lou, maybe a little Miltonic dialogue, some angelic Wachowski kung-fu and a lot of exploding shrieking plummeting horrible demons. . . HOT DIGGITY!!! I can't believe nobody's made this thing yet!

Ya, St. Michael! I'd like a movie showing angels as formidable, awesome -- and not cutesy or effete. I look forward to sword fights reminiscent of Star Wars light saber duels -- perhaps even more awesome. Perhaps we could get a swordsman and/or martial artist to teach the actors sword fighting with a few moves from arnis/kali/silat.
We'd also need a great soundtrack.
Now whom do we cast as St. Michael?

Cristina, I'm sure you're probably already married to a great guy and God bless you both, but the fact that you know what arnis is makes you so damned cool that--just on the off chance that you aren't--I want you to know that I'm not seeing anyone right now and I'm a damned good-lookin' red-head.
Oh, also--St. Michael actor? Tom Welling, hands down.

Anyway, here's some info on arnis and other Filipino martial arts: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filipino_martial_artsen.wikipedia.org/wiki/EskrimaWhat do you guys think -- would it work for the fighting sequences in our St. Michael movie? Or should we stick to good old European sword fighting? Oh, and we haven't even talked about possible movies about the two other archangels!
