I like the background as it is -- especially the way it slants up toward her and is actually darker than the shadow behind her. The shape of it says something: it implies a sort of self-enclosure, I think, which seems to have been what you're after.
I agree about the skirt folds, though. Rather than thinking them stiff, I think maybe they come up a bit high on the side of her leg; it seems to me they should start where the chair starts, under her thigh, which is where the skirt would naturally start to drape. There's also one fold-line that seems to loop entirely around her knee, and that doesn't seem quite natural to me.
I like the way you have her arms sort of tucked into her clothing, though. It underlines her state of emotional helplessness.
Overall the drawing is really, really nice. I don't mean to nitpick, especially where I have very little ability myself. Those are just the things I saw -- kind of an extension and response to pierre's comments.

I especially liked your simple figure in black, which is very evocative. A more expansive background isn't a bad suggestion (thanks Pierre), but the limited background isn't necessarily a problem. I kind of like it, and it would work very well for a book illustration surrounded on one side with text. The folds are probably a bit stiff although I'm not sure that's entirely problematic in itself. But the dress pleats become a bit confusing on the lower right. Overall I like it much, and I'd suggest not amending it without saving your current version as a separate file as well. Sometimes some of our revisions of past art don't turn out to be real improvements. By the way, what software are you using?
