Methinks Cynthia Ozick is going on the reading list:

Well, I just read "The Shawl"--yeesh. Not exactly the feel-good hit of the summer. The term "harrowing" springs to mind. But not in the happy, Christian, "Harrowing of Hell," Aslan breathing on the statues, kind of way. More like crawling an intermediate distance over poorly tended barbed wire. Ozick is wise to keep a story of this kind very brief, so that it ends just as you're beginning to realize how horrible everything is and you don't really have time to brace yourself. It's like catching an elbow in the jaw when you thought the guy was going for a handshake: it only takes a second, but then you have to deal with the aftermath. Anyway--good story. In a hideous kind of way.
