The following are some sample designs that we are working on for our upcoming Cafepress.com store. Please Take a look and share your thoughts with us. The important thing is the actual design on the shirt, not the type of shirt used, as each design can be used on different items. I'm not sure how the pictures will show up on these forums, but let's hope the images look fine. Here they are: Greene, Graham Shirt Flannery O'Connor Shirt Counter, Original, Spare, Strange (Design 1) Messenger Bag Counter, Original, Spare, Strange (Design 2) Shirt Gandalf - Aragorn 2008 Campaign Shirt Chesterton Shirt Santiago Cross Golf Shirt

I think the Greene, Graham one is hilarious, as is the Gandalf and Aragorn political campaign one! And the rest are really nice too. I'd love to get that Flannery O'Connor one, but I don't feel ready yet since I haven't read that much of her writing! Perhaps in a year or so.
Also, how about making another Tolkien-related one but featuring the man himself?

I decided to move this to "The Workshop" from "The Living Room" as it really fits this forum better -- the t-shirts beign, after all, works in progress. I'd love to hear you opinions and suggestions. Please let us know what you think!

Whee! I am totally buying one of the 'Flannery!' shirts, no matter how much they cost. You can take that as a pledge. I would also love a Gandalf/Aragorn '08, but it depends on how many articles I sell between now and then as to what my pocketbook will stand.

None of the designs would be a compelling purchase for me, but that's just me. Out of all of them, the "counter, original, spare, strange" seems the most interesting design, and the Chesterton artwork is cute. The Santiago cross one is definitely classic.

Thanks for your honest comment, Rieping! I guess my question then would be: what type of t-shirt *would* you love to buy? Any ideas would be tremendously appreciated!

I'd get the Gandalf-Aragorn one and the Santiago cross one IF I had the money and if you accept overseas orders I'm thinking of a Narnia-related shirt. If you could obtain permission from Walden Media to use some of their images, you could make a shirt which has an image of Aslan in the back. The front says, "No animals on a literal level nor divine beings on a symbolic level were harmed in the making of this movie."

I think it would be rather difficult to obtain permission from Walden Media, but that's an interesting idea. Perhaps if we didn't use any official Narnia stuff, but merely alluded to the movie (or books), something could be figured out. Let me think about it.

"what type of t-shirt *would* you love to buy?" I rarely buy special t-shirts, but when I do I personally prefer something that are not overly topical and so won't become outdated in a few years (hence the "Gandalf + Aragorn 2008" doesn't appeal to me). I like clever humor t-shirts, but prefer humor with a deeper message or purpose. "One trick ponies" get old fast. I love t-shirts with a message so long as it's a very good and timeless one. I don't mind wearing a shirt that identifies me as a fan of some sort of work, project or such, but unless the cause is amazingly important (like pro-life work) then I prefer if the shirt also have some other sort of message or hook too. I most love t-shirts with great art combined with a great message. My most recent t-shirt buy was a black t-shirt with a line drawing of Jesus crucified on it, the words "Pardoned" writ large, and then a wonderful Scripture quote in smaller print. The t-shirt looks lovely and impressive, and the message is powerful and timeless. Another t-shirt I bought at the same time was a black t-shirt with big and bold white letters stating simply: "FREE HUGS GIVEN HERE!" Simple and timeless, yet ingenuous, funny and unique. The message is also one I heartily endorse! I loved it! I've had it a year and still get comments on it. I most dislike t-shirts that are overly trendy or obscure, so that if you see it you're clueless as to what it means ... or its a shirt you've seen a million times before with only slight variations. Does that help at all? Sorry if I sound too picky, and I am sure my opinion is mine alone. Others have different tastes.

Oh... and the Chesterton t-shirt that you show above has wonderful artwork in my opinion. What it lacks is a stunning Chestertonian quote that is clever, witty and profound (and Chesterton has many of those). Or a lovely poem that is also profound (and Chesterton has those too). Something that complements the artwork would be best... Such as:
T-SHIRT BACK: "Hark! Laughter like a lion wakes To roar to the resounding plain, And the whole Heaven shouts and shakes, For God Himself is born again, And we are little children walking Through the snow and rain."
+ G.K. Chesterton, "The Nativity"
Or perhaps:
T-SHIRT BACK: "Have a myriad children been quickened, Have a myriad children grown old, Grown gross and unloved and embittered, Grown cunning and savage and cold? God abides in a terrible patience, Unangered, unworn, And again for the child that was squandered A child is born."
+ G.K. Chesterton, "The Nativity"
Or perhaps even better, a clever and witty quote on childhood (or spiritual childhood) by Chesterton on the front of the shirt... Or a different poem excerpt on the back. These are just examples.

Those are actually some really nice quotes. I think I'll try to put up some alternative designs that include them or something similar. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'm glad you liked the quotes. They were favorites of mine after reading them excerpted in John Saward's book "The Way of the Lamb". But if you want easy access to other wonderful G.K. Chesterton quotes, visit here --> en.wikiquote.org/wiki/G._K._ChestertonThey did a really good job at "wikiquote" (an offshoot of wikipedia) with providing many wonderful Chesterton quotes. May God bless you all.

Great, thanks a lot!
The shop should go online sometime today, perhaps a bit later than most shoppers would like, but still in time to get things delivered by Christmas.

Do you accept overseas orders? Not that I can afford to order at the moment, but who knows?
