I am in the start-up phase of a small book publishing venture and I'm looking for writers who might like to join me. The idea is to set up a small, literary press, run by the writers themselves as a cooperative venture. We will rely on POD (publish on demand) technology, and market the books ourselves, mostly over the internet, and also in any other way we can think up. By joining together a few good writers in a cooperative venture, we can lend one another credibility, and also increase visibility for the whole project and for each book.
I have mastered the dark arts of production and can produce a high quality, attractive and completely professional-looking book. The start-up cost is only the cost of a proof copy, i.e. about £10 including postage (depending on length of the book). You would be able to purchase as many copies as you like at cost. You are not, however, obliged to purchase any.
There’s not likely to be much money in it – I have nothing for start-up costs and will be doing the work for nothing so I can’t offer anything like an advance. But you would be entitled to royalties from the sale of your work, and you would be able to discuss what price you’d like to set, which would determine the amount you get per copy sold.
I’d be responsible for designing the book and getting it into distribution. You would be more than welcome to have input on any phase of this. You would be responsible for sending me the manuscript in clearly formatted word document form. Once your book is published we would send out review copies and I’d encourage you to publicise it wherever possible. I would also be responsible for submitting all revenues from the sale of your book to you and for sending you regular statements. Andromache Books will NOT be taking a ‘cut’ – you get to keep everything your book earns above production cost and retail mark-up. You also have the option of publishing your book without a royalty payment, which means you get nothing, but the price is considerably lower to the public. (This is what I’ve done with my own titles.)
I would also be responsible for maintaining the website at andromachebooks.co.uk. Each writer would be given an individual page on the website to showcase their work, and you would be able to edit this page yourself, should you wish to do so.
The books will be distributed both through the lulu.com market place and through all the major online retailers including amazon. Lulu will offer the books at a slightly cheaper price to the public than will amazon etc. Each book will have its own ISBN and be listed in bibliographic feeds, and put on deposit at the British Library/Library of Congress.
I’ve got a few of my own titles ready to go but they look a bit lonely. I’d like to use the opportunity of setting up this venture to draw attention to a few other people besides myself, if I can.I have a few poets on board already, and I'm looking for novels, novellas and short story collections to add to our list.
Of course I promise nothing, you understand - this is a new venture! I would be publishing your work under ‘non-exclusive rights’, you retain the copyright, and you retain the right to publish your work elsewhere should that opportunity arise.
So, there it is! Let me know whether you’re interested. As I said, the thing is just in the start-up phase, but you can get an idea of it from the website here:
