Happy Friday, dappled folks! I'm in a great mood, and I hope you are, too. Why? I got an idea! I'm going to begin a new writing project! (And I even have a babysitter lined up for tomorrow so I can actually, y'know, write!) And starting a new project makes me feel really good. I hope my fellow wordsmiths are all deeply in craftsmanship, spelling it out for the glory of God.
Someday, we really ought to discuss the word "spell" and the Logos. Hooray for words!

Happy Friday to you! Can't wait to hear about your project. I'm hip deep in a 45pp poem (An Image of Grace). May have bitten off more than I can chew. Keep us updated. Make much hay while the babysitter shines.

Hey, Kate. How's it coming? Does it have kung-fu? Vampires? Kung-fu vampires? Is it in the first person or the third? Is it set in the present day or the mythic past or the dystopian future? Are there car chases? Little rows of asterisks denoting tastefully understated sex scenes? Is Hitler in it--undead or otherwise? Are there robots? French maids? If they made a movie out of it, who would play the male lead? Does anyone say witty one-liners, or are they too sagacious for that sort of thing? Is the main chick hot? Is she based on a real person and, if so, is she available? What's her number? Is she into red-heads? On spelling and spells--someone just pointed out to me the other day that "grammar" and "gramayre/grimoire" (spellbooks) are basically the same word. Interesting, non? (That was French. I would've italicized it, but the italics don't always seem to work and you just get €###non###€, and nobody wants to see that. Except maybe the French. They have subtly different aesthetic standards from those of the English-writing world. It's why they're always writing in that weird non-English language of theirs. What's it called?--oh yes, French.) Anyway, happy Advent and good writin'. Peace!

Firefolk, I think I adore you, sight unseen. (But now I know you have red hair--aha!) Spell: (1)letters of a word, (2)enchantment, (3)provision of a break in one's duty (as in what the babysitter will do for Bluemaydie).

Thanks, Estiel! I'm a Leo who enjoys jazz and horse-racing, and my favorite color is blue. So like, if I said, "Y'all come in and sit a spell, now," I take it that "spell" in such a usage would fall under definition #3? That makes sense. You've just expanded my knowledge base, so--adoration right back atcha. And hey, Kate, shouldn't you have said, ". . . [i/] pas des [i/] vampires" instead of just "pas des vampires"? Let's not take this anglicization thing to the point of imperialism. Also, it's strangely fun to type out [i/] instead of merely italicizing things. If I were a French person, would I have to italicize everything I wrote, since it would all be in French? (Kidding. Sorry. Sorry.) But seriously, good luck and may the Secret Fire burn bright in your pen. Also, happy Immaculate Conception to whomever reads this, although it's late enough now that it will probably already be the ninth by the time anyone sees it. Except my dear friend and fellow red-head Katy C., who should probably be sleeping right now instead of reading my nonsense. Go to bed, Katy!

Actually, no, Firefolk, your usage (sit a spell) is (4). Odd--I completely forgot the second most common (letters in a word likely the most common. (3) is evidently one you don't know. It's a transitive verb, the object of which is human. Example: "Come here, Sadie, and spell me stirring this batter--I've got to go to the bathroom." Seriously. Very old-fashioned. Southern. Granny used it. Hence, the babysitter will spell Bluemaydie so she can work on her project.
